The Grand Esbat – for those that aren’t familiar with what this is, this is a “Craft Myth” – the coming together of multiple covens for the purposes of imposing the collective will in times of really great need.
We DO have a passed down ritual for the use of the “Grand Esbat” that was said to have been used or could be used – as it was a story talked about by many Wiccan elders in terms of the Grand Esbat – such as being used in the magical battles to keep invading forces out of Britain.
Tarostar was always skeptical of these types of stories and thought they belonged to the category of “Craft Myth” rather than “Craft Fact,” although, there is something within these Craft Myths that we can learn from though….
The ritual that is passed down itself CAN be utilized for these purposes – this old typed document goes on and tells you how to do it in times of crisis when multiple covens can be summoned to apply the pressure of the collective will of multiple covens of witches working in tandem.
Whether it actually happened in that exact way and was aimed at impeding the Spanish Armada or the Germans, that’s besides the point …. This is what you “can” do and make it work. Maybe it was inspired from the work Dion Fortune’s group was doing? Maybe the story was copied from Operation Mistletoe? We just don’t know.
But like all good myths…. I believe this teaches us what we “should do” should a situation come to light.
Even if the story didn’t actually happen as said, and I am fairly confident in feeling that it didn’t happen, and that this is Craft-myth, legend and a teaching moment – that we have something to learn from it … and today, yes, we can invoke the “Grand Esbat” at a “Grand Coven” anytime we wish. (I do remain open minded though!)
Have we performed “Grand Esbats” here using the passed down ritual that organizes multiple covens? Yes, I can confirm it’s use – though the details of those events remain extrodinarily secret.
Blessed Be!
